Alabama Department of Rehabilitation; Business Enterprise Program (BEP)

Provides qualified blind individuals with job training and employment opportunities through the management and operation of small businesses that provide independence through self-employment.

A statewide system of supports and services for infants and toddlers (from birth to 3 years of age) with disabilities and their families.

Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services: Independent Living Support Services

A program to assist persons with disabilities to remain in their homes and communities through services that include basic independent living skills training, peer support, information and referral and advocacy.

Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services: Statewide Technology Access and Response (STAR) System

Offers training and funding information for assistive technology.  Free services include training, technology, demonstration, equipment loans, financial loan program, equipment recycling and information referral.

Alabama Department of Senior Services

Offers a variety of services for the elderly, including transportation, information and referral, needs assessment, legal services, nutrition services, health services, recreation programs and various home delivered services.

 

Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program (ADAP)

Provides legally-based advocacy services to Alabamians with disabilities to protect, promote, and expand their rights.  ADAP advocates provide Social Security beneficiaries free assistance to help them overcome barriers that are preventing them from working or pursuing higher education opportunities.

Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB)

A division of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind.  Employs more than 200 blind and deaf adults in a diverse manufacturing facility that produces a variety of goods including: flags, brooms, flight bags, and all military neckties for the U.S. Armed Forces.

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB)

A comprehensive education and service program for individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind or deaf-blind and multidisabled. AIDB has five campuses in Talladega including: Alabama School for the Blind, Alabama School for the Deaf, Helen Keller School of Alabama, E.H Gentry Technical Facility and Alabama Industries for the Blind.  AIDB has a network of nine Regional Centers across the state. AIDB programs and services are free to Alabama residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, deaf-blind and visually impaired.

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Regional Centers

A network of nine Regional Centers across the state of Alabama with locations in: Auburn, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa and Tuscumbia.  Offer services for people with hearing and vision loss-beginning with infants and continuing through senior citizens.  These services include early intervention, counseling, interpreting, transportation and other daily living and adjustment programs.

Alabama Instructional Resource Center for the Blind

A division of the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind.  Provides accessible textbooks and educational resources to blind and visually impaired students and institutions.  Also a National Library Service Subregional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped serving the residents of Coosa, Talladega, and St. Clair Counties.

Alabama Lions Sight Conservation Association, Inc.

A non-profit state project of the Lions Clubs of Alabama.  Funding medically necessary eye care for low-income adults and children, and providing vision screenings in school and communities across the state.

Alabama Print Information Center

Daily and weekly readings from many Alabama local newspapers and a variety of national publications available free to the blind and visually impaired consumer.

Alabama Radio Reading Service Network

Provides access to a wide variety of printed material via closed circuit radio to the blind and visually impaired.

Alabama Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (BPH)

This division through a cooperative network within the Library of Congress/National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped brings special format reading materials, playback equipment and other library resources to qualifying users. Free mailing privileges are provided by the United States Post Office. There is no charge for any part of the service.

Alabama School for the Blind

Provides traditional and nontraditional programs and educational experiences for children ages 3-21 who are blind and vision impaired as residential or day students.

Helps Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries, between the ages of 14 and 64, understand their work options so that they may make more informed choices regarding employment.

Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority Paratransit

Curb-to-curb service for $4.  Must fill out application for service.

Camp ASCCA (Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults)

Provides camping experience for children and adults with disabilities within its barrier-free environment.

Camp Smile

A residential summer camp for individuals with or without disabilities.  Uses adaptive rules and specialized equipment.

Community Services for Vision Rehabilitation

Medical clinic which provides professional evaluation by a doctor, occupational therapists, ophthalmic technicians, computer specialists, and others.  Offers support groups, advocacy, and adaptive device loan programs.

Department of Veterans Affairs. Southeastern Blind Rehabilitation Center

A residential inpatient program that provides comprehensive adjustment to blindness.   Services include orientation and mobility, communication skills, activities of daily living, manual skills, visual skills, computer access training and social/recreational activities.

Easter Seals of Alabama

Provides services for people with disabilities and their families.  Offers job training and employment, transportation and educational services.

Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA)

Provides services to keep seniors independent in their own home including transportation to medical appointments, grocery store, and pharmacy.

Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center

A facility that makes recreation accessible to the disabled population.  Offers many adapted programs for different disabilities.

NFB-Newsline

An on-demand newspaper service which allows blind or print disabled people to hear the text of newspaper articles, magazines and television listings over the telephone. 

National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped: Application for Free Library Service

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, administers the free program that loans recorded and braille books and magazines, music scores in braille and large print, and specially designed playback equipment to residents of the United States who are unable to read or use standard print materials because of visual or physical impairment.

Older Alabamians System of Information and Services (OASIS)

A statewide free program to assist visually impaired persons 55 and over to live independently in their homes.  Services include rehabilitation teaching services, orientation and mobility instruction, low-vision examinations and devices, individual peer support, support groups, mail reading services, and transportation assistance to low-vision clinics.

Sight Savers America

Helps provide eyeglasses, medications, surgeries, vision and blind aids, low vision clinics and other prescribed treatments to low income families at no cost.

Southern Disability Foundation

Administers Alabama’s Assistive Technology Alternate Financing Program which allows individuals with disabilities to acquire and purchase assistive technology devices and services.

Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students

A week long camp held at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.  The programs are specifically designed for blind and visually impaired students.

State of Alabama Client Assistance Program (SACAP)

A federally-funded program designed to assist individuals with disabilities in resolving problems they may experience with any of Alabama’s federally-funded rehabilitation programs.

Tuscaloosa Subregional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped

Free library services for the blind and physically handicapped which include: loan of braille books, talking books and special playback equipment, audio and braille magazine subscriptions, and home visits for those unable to come to the library.

Tuscaloosa Transit Authority

Offers demand response vans which offer curb-to-curb service to medical appointments, etc.  Application required for service.  $4 for service.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital

Provides quality care regardless of one’s ability to pay.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation

A research and rehabilitation center that provides quality patient care, teaching and research to advance knowledge in the area of vision rehabilitation.

Visually Impaired People, Inc.

Provides low vision educational programs, support, and mentoring to the blind and visually impaired of Selma and throughout Dallas County.

VSA arts of Alabama

A statewide, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities in the arts for people with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

Workshops, Inc.
